NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party was trying to regain power in the federal territory that includes New Delhi on Wednesday as residents voted in a state legislature election. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party hasn’t won the territory that includes India’s capital of 20 million people in over a quarter-century.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is pitted against the Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, which runs Delhi and has built a vast support base on its popular welfare policies and an anti-corruption movement.

Voting was underway on Wednesday in Delhi, the union territory that includes the capital of India, New Delhi, to decide the 70 members of its legislative assembly in a tight election whose results are scheduled to be declared on Saturday.

Polling has started in India's capital of New Delhi in a crucial state legislature election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party-- which rules in a coalition nationally-- is vying for a comeback in Delhi after 27 years.

In Delhi, the prominent contested constituencies include New Delhi, Jangpura, Kalkaji, Okhla, Mustafabad, Bijwasan, Kasturba Nagar, Greater Kailash, Patparganj, etc.

As Delhi votes for the 2025 Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the democratic process. He urged voters to exercise their right and contribute to strengthening democracy.
